How to remove Asbestos

We are starting to see more property owner’s asking questions about asbestos regarding  their health and how to remove it.  One of the responses for this surge of questions is because many people are investing in older homes and they want to renovate and make structural changes. Over the last few years the media and many publications have shared the problems that can be associated with asbestos and your health. Today the risks of asbestos exposure are widely known, with a clear link between asbestos exposure and risk for cancer and other serious medication conditions. One of the dangers associated with asbestos is that the fibers of the asbestos enter the body typically by inhalation or ingestion. When these fibers land in vulnerable tissues like the trachea, bronchi or lungs these tissues become inflamed and can lead to serious medical conditions like mesothelioma, asbestosis which can lead to fatal lung cancer.

Asbestos was a popular construction material until the l980s because of its desirable qualities. Asbestos is durable, fire-resistant, flexible, and insulates thermally well. It has been widely used to provide insulation and fireproofing for homes, acoustic insulation, roofing, and flooring for commercial buildings. However, asbestos has a controversial and hazardous reputation of causing sever lung problems and other diseases. Asbestos that is friable (that which crumbles when dried) is especially hazardous, and is more popularly used in earlier establishments.

Many property owners become aware of asbestos when they are renovating their home. We often hear cases of people who are in the process of having their floor tiles removed, replacing the siding of their home, of in some case having boilers repaired.  The comment property owners often hear is we cannot proceed until we determine if you have asbestos. The next step in the process is that you look for a certified asbestos tester who will visit your property and take samples which will be sent to a certified lab for analysis.  Should you have asbestos there are strict guideline for safe removal and disposal of asbestosis. When you work with a certified asbestosis specialist and have it removed you can then continue with your renovation.

Since 2003, asbestos has been totally banned as a building material, and asbestos abatement from establishments have been common since. However, removing asbestos is not an easy task, as asbestos poses a huge threat to any human. It is best to have friable asbestos removed by only OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) qualified asbestos abatement company that is certified to work with protective clothing and only approved equipment when removing friable asbestos. Asbestos abatement should be done with extreme caution preventing any asbestos fiber to lodge in the smallest spaces. This is not something that is a do-it-yourself project.

But remember that asbestos is virtually non-toxic when left unharmed. Non-friable asbestos does not posit a threat to anyone’s health unless signs of flaking, crumbling, or dusting is present. When you have any questions regarding asbestos it is the best practice to consult with a certified specialist.
